People with disabilities still have many barriers in their way to being treated as equal. One way to summarize them is under 3 barriers:

1). Attitude Barriers. Some people still do not see a full person when they look at someone with a disability. Instead of seeing the person, they just see the disability (see our "See Me", "See the Person, Not the Disability" or "Swipe Left on Ableism" Shirts for more on that). They have a very low view of people with disabilities and assume they cannot contribute to society as equally as others. I had one person who used to be close to me make it very apparent that all he saw when he looked at my daughter was her disability because he saw her as a huge financial burden.

2). Environmental Barriers. There are many stores and places that we simply can't take our daughter to because they are still not easily accessible to her (if at all). We have to pre-plan out our trips if we want to go anywhere. My daughter (Sammi Haney) plays Esperanza, a sassy little girl with pink glasses, in Netflix's Raising Dion. Sammi has Osteogenesis Imperfecta (O.I.) Type III or “Brittle Bone Disease”, and so she uses a wheelchair. While filming in Atlanta we took her to the most accessible park in Atlanta for people with disabilities and it still had almost nothing for her to do there. I am so glad that in Texas we have

3). Institutional Barriers. This refers to laws, policies, etc... that discriminate against people with disabilities. I can't tell you now many times insurance (or a program she is in) has told us that our daughter does not need something, that she absolutely needs just for daily life. So many policies are backwards and unhelpful. We once needed something for her physical therapy, and the worker for a program told me we could not get it, but we could get her a big screen TV (we did not get the TV, instead we fought and got what she needed for physical therapy).

The logo used on this product was created by Sammi's Dad (Matt Haney) and may not be reproduced or copied.
